Rice's "new Middle East"

Condoleeza Rice has said: "It is time for a new Middle East. It is time to say to those who do not want a different kind of Middle East that we will prevail, they will not."

Fiona says:

Whose kind of Middle East? Palestinians? er.. no. Not even the Israeli (Jewish) vision of the M.E. come to that. But some sort of an increasingly bankrupt, in every sense of the word, American neo-liberal muddle of a Middle-East I would say. When she said "we" will prevail who did she have in mind exactly? And does the prospect of a possible Palestinian 'civil war' not delight the American and Israeli administrations alike despite the hand-wringing and grave pronouncements?

Robbie says:

Perhaps it would help to view "Middle East" not as a geographical term but as a fantasy one, where all words and meaning are  turned on their head.

Thus:

  • bringing democracy to the "ME" means kidnapping half the elected cabinet of Palestine;
  • bringing freedom to the "ME" means completely destroying the infrastructure, hospitals, bridges, power stations, water supplies;
  • possessing WMD means you will have WMD rain down on you;
  • Israel facing the threat of extinction means Lebanon ceasing to function as a viable state;
  • UN peace treaty means forcing on the Lebanese what America, Britain & Israel can't achieve militarily;
  • Israels's surgical strikes means killing 100s of more civilians than Hizbullah militia;
  • Hizbullah's indescriminate rocket firing means killing 3 times as many soldiers as civilians.

The "Middle East" is more surreal than anything Salvador Dali and George Orwell could have dreamed up together.

Laurence says:

The war in the Lebanon has shown that Both the Zionists and Bush/Rice are not able to push people around anymore They are in a huge crisis. Hezbollah has shown that it has the support of Workers and poor in the Lebanon who are standing up against agression and hostility and are prepared to defend their country against global war and famine. The call for a ceasefire is out of desperation not strength. It is time for policies advocated by A World to Win, where democracy and rights for ordinary people are justified and organisations like Hezbollah and Hamas are treated as true representatives of the people.
