Launch conference: feedback from workgroups
Group 1
1. Campaigning and Recruitment
- Local/regional groups as well as a national and central. Groups mirrored
in regions, i.e. the Midlands Climate Change group.
- Groups should be organisational and research/campaigning.
- Papers up on the web site; message board for each group.
- Use AWTW members' existing networks, identify with local campaigns
and actions, make links and report back to AWTW.
- Co-operate with other organisations for research, and joint campaigns.
- Establish links with creative individuals.
2. Training, Education and Meetings
- Summary of main themes of the book to use for recruitment plus other
publicity materials - flyers, posters and postcards.
- Education and training: local and national; conferences and classes
in public speaking, communicating AWTW principles; guest experts.
- Train people to apply the principles of the book to new situations.
- Key role of the media (newspapers, TV and radio) - but as mainstream
media won't cover AWTW create our own forms of communication.
- Engage young people and plan now for a Freshers' Week campaign.
3. Priorities
- Clarify and discuss the structure of AWTW
- Establish Regional Groups and main specialist Groups
- Set up discussion focusing on analysis and theory
- Links with faith communities and other constituencies/organisations.
Discussion should not be insular, but outward looking and inclusive.
Group 2
1. Campaigning & Recruitment
- Info on group members' job/expertise/interests available on an intranet
- but NB privacy/data protection.
- Connect to individuals and organisations outside of AWTW - not hijack
them - working relationship to share information/skills and ideas.
- As much information from 'on the ground' e.g. in Africa, as possible.
- Revisit tried and tested campaigning and recruitment methods but
also less conventional methods.
2. Education, Training, Meetings
- Democratic training, not lecturing but encourage input and debate.
Follow up with reading list of articles/books and put all on website.
- Democratic decision-making - easy to slide into 'top down'.
3. Priorities
- Mission statement so people can see from website and other literature
what AWTW are about.
- AWTW opposes capitalism, imperialism, poverty & economic globalisation
& supports environmentalism, equality and cultural diversity.
- Mutual respect for other people's opinions and values, within and
outside of AWTW. A forum comfortable for people to express views.
Group 3
1. Campaigning and Recruitment
- Advertise the book to strengthen our identity, using media, internet
campaigns and direct interaction with people and interventions at events.
- Create a network: identify allies and link with other organisations
(despite our different perspectives and agendas). Keep our central perspective
- the transfer of power - which distinguishes us. Examples of organisations:
Creative Forum, NEPD, Attack, Venezuela Solidarity.
- Make the book more accessible by summarizing it, editing it, making
a film or recording illustrating the main points.
2. Training, Education, Meetings
- Good speakers and work with organisations set up to train people
to develop communication skills, for example The Society of Cogers.
- Encourage personal development by teaching new skills. Emphasise the
importance of self-empowerment as a key part of education.
3. Priorities
- The transfer of political and economic power
- Hold an open seminar
- Promote our principles to other organisations, with which we will
develop a reciprocal relationship
- Elect a publicity officer.
Group 4
1. Campaigning & recruitment
- Exhibitions in different parts of the country - visual is more inspiring.
- Campaigning not just with political people - people coming together
and organising themselves to the greater good.
- Use methods like film, art, study other people's methods - Nobel
Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai would be a good case study.
- Groups should recommend campaigns in their area of interest.
- Have a membership card, with some principles on the back.
- Encourage schools/universities to use AWTW as a case study.
- Prepare a press release - or interviews with members
2. Training, Education, Meetings
- Ultimately need a newspaper/magazine - not an epic read, accessible
- Website could pilot newspaper and be an area for training people
- Need useful, accessible website; use hit stats to plan content
- Organise meetings or forums on the website and teleconferencing.
E.g. constitution developed by email but needed final meeting.
- Also need face-to-face contact, not just technology. Map out organisation's
links in UK and other countries and help those living near to meet up.
3. Priorities
- The groups all seem important, with the exception of the international
group as every activity we do will be international anyway.
- We need to use people's interests and skills for progressing these
areas
- We need to have a really organic organisation that is constantly
changing and adapting.
