This conference provides a timely opportunity to challenge the failing capitalist market economy and to advance socialist solutions to the growing global financial and economic crisis. The Northern Rock debacle has exposed the fragility of the globalised economy and the precariousness of New Labour’s economic strategy’s wholesale dependence on finance capital. Meanwhile, people are facing the imposition of pay cuts despite rising prices. Repossessions are at the highest level for a decade, inflation is rising and jobs will go as cuts in public spending and further privatisations bite, and retail sales slide. Many forecasters say that global capitalism is heading into a major recession and perhaps even a slump. This conference brings together economists, trade unionists, students and campaigners to debate the crisis and, importantly, to develop contemporary socialist policies in key areas.
